Wilton Community Land Trust leads the way in Wiltshire

Published: 18 May 2012

We’re delighted to announce that Wilton is the first community in Wiltshire to set up its own Community Land Trust.

Wilton Community Land Trust was registered as a not-for-profit Industrial and Provident Society in April 2012 and will be working over the next few months to build its organisational capacity and take on exciting new projects in the local area.

Membership of the Wilton CLT is open to everyone living and working in the Wilton area.  It seems to have captured local imagination, with many volunteers stepping up to sit on the interim board, an advisory panel and to take part in a growing number of working groups all made up of local people putting forward ideas for the CLT to explore. The CLT is already involved in plans to develop an Eco Park on the edge of Wilton and has been approached to work with other local organisations concerning energy adaptations and helping to improve the rivers and green spaces around Wilton.

Wilton CLT is the newest of a growing movement of Community Land Trusts in England.  There are now more 100 CLTs located from Cornwall to Cumbria.  They own and manage a range of assets for community benefit, such as housing affordable for people on local wages, shops, pubs, workspace, orchards and community gardens.

Rose Seagrief, our CLT manager, has been heavily involved in setting up the Wilton CLT and in making sure that the community is properly advised: ‘Over the last few months I have been working closely with members of the local community to develop their CLT. Now they are in a position to take advantage of the many opportunities that are opening up locally, particularly through the new Localism Bill. A Community Land Trust is an ideal vehicle for people to make a real difference about what happens in their neighbourhood.  I look forward to helping many more communities to set up CLTs in Wiltshire and Swindon in the coming months’.

Chair of Wilton Community Land Trust’s interim board is Quidhampton resident Ken Taylor. Ken is keen that as many local people as possible become involved; ‘We have a real opportunity here to improve our area and create long term solutions to some of the current issues that are affecting our community.  The impetus for creating the CLT is the opportunity to bid for and develop the Erskine Barracks site as an Eco Park together with community-minded developer Our Enterprise, however the CLT structure gives the opportunity to tackle other issues important to local people’.
